Being an Atlanta Falcons fan is like being stranded on a desert island that sits atop an erupting volcano which is caught in a CAT 5 hurricane. The amount of heartbreak that comes along with rooting for Matty Ice and his club of talented delinquents is astronomical. Sunday’s game was devastating. Losing to the Lions the way that the Lions lose to everybody else hurts like my 8th day on earth. It didn't quite hurt me in the same place, but the pain isn’t far off.
There's this guttural pain you get from watching your team give up a lead. Unfortunatly, it's a feeling I'm getting used to as a Falcons fan. After our Super Bowl loss to Tom Brady and the Pats, I thought the Dirty Birds couldn't hurt me anymore, but they keep finding a way to stab me in the heart. I hate to blame Todd Gurley (And no, I don't think he's washed up just yet) but honestly... just take a knee. You don't have to score; we can run the clock down and kick a field goal. We have Koo, one of the coolest-named kickers in the National Football League. Just take the knee man!
I can’t even try to put myself in the shoes of a running back, who's only job is to score TDs, so I do get it. In the moment, Gurley felt as though he just had to score. He's been programmed to do that since birth. But the real reason I can't hold him responsible is because our defense chokes the hardest out of every defense in the league. Matt Stafford had to go 80 yards in under a minute and we let him do it. There is no Dan Quinn to throw the blame on. Oh no. This is on the organization as a whole. The owner, Arthur Blank, was standing on the sidelines like the Grim Reaper just staring daggers at his team. That's never a good sign to see the owner come down from the box to stand among the players.
The question I've been pondering is as follows: What does the future hold for the Falcons?
The simple answer: A whole lotta' heartbreak.
