Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers get set to take on Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in the super bowl. This is the first time a team is playing in the super bowl in their stadium. This is also Tom Brady's first year in the NFC.
KC offense vs Tampa Bay defense
The Chiefs have the most confusing offense in the league. They tantalize defenses with the different motions and players running around before the snap. Defensive players don’t know where to look and who to follow.
The Chiefs offense has stars across the lineup. Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, and Mecole Hardmon continually give defensive coordinators nightmares. They are all very fast and stretch defenses horizontally and vertically. The Chiefs also feature the best tight end in football: Travis Kelce. Kelce is a great blocker and an even better receiver. He lines up inside, in the slot, out wide, and in the backfield. Kelce poses a unique challenge because he is both fast and physical and most NFL players are either one or the other.
The Chiefs also feature Clyde Edwards-Helaire. The rookie running back had a great rookie campaign. Edwards-Helaire forces defenses to not sell out on the pass, or run the risk of him chewing up defenses.
The best player on the Chiefs offense is Patrick Mahomes. He has a phenomenal arm and he dissects defenses no matter what they try and do to stop him. He won the 2018 MVP, 2019 Super Bowl MVP, and he is trying to notch his second straight ring.
The Buccaneers defense can’t match up with the Kansas City offense. No defense can. When the Buccaneers and Chiefs squared off in week 12 the Chiefs had over 500 yards of offense. Tyreek Hill had more than 250 yards and three touchdowns. But, there are a couple of differences. Eric Fisher will not be playing. This will give the Buccaneers defense line a chance to get to Mahomes. They have to harass Mahomes while playing quarterback contain. If they can do they will slow down Mahomes and hope Tom Brady does his job.
Tampa Bay offense vs KC defense
In the offseason, the Buccaneers brought in Tom Brady to take over their offense. Brady got the job done. He protected the ball and enjoyed a plethora of stars.
Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Antonio Brown are the big names that dominate the Buccanneers receiving corps. They will have to be a big part of a Buccanneers win. They attack defenses all over the field. Because of their depth, they get favorable matchups outside. That also leaves room inside for Rob Gronkowski and Cameron Brate. Like the Chiefs, opposing defenses have to pick their poison. Defenses can’t cover everyone. This leaves Tom Brady to find his best matchup. Brady is playing in his tenth super bowl and has continued to pick apart defenses based on his presnap reads.
The Buccaneers running game features Ronald Jones and Leonard Fournette. They are an adequate change of pace to the passing game. Like the Chiefs, they force teams to stay honest or give up a lot of rushing yards
The Chiefs will have to disguise their coverages and fronts. They won’t be able to stop Brady, but they should be able to slow him down. Brady threw three interceptions against the Packers in the NFC Championship and he threw two interceptions against the Chiefs in week 12. Brady’s arm isn’t what it used to be, but he still finds a way to win.
Prediction
The Chiefs will get their second straight super bowl victory. The Chiefs have the stronger offense, and a turnover or two won’t be enough to give the Buccaneers a victory. The Chiefs can stop Brady. The Buccanneers defense can’t stop Mahomes.
