When news broke Monday morning that Cleveland browns star Wide Receiver Odell Beckham Jr would be out for the year, all of the “feel better” tweets from fellow star players started to roll out, immediately followed by what fantasy impact this would have. In a world with 60 million fantasy football teams, every time a player goes out it has crucial ramifications.
Although OBJ was projected to earn nearly 15 points a week, he only averaged a mere 12 points in PPR leagues while his fellow WR Jarvis Landy averaged 11. It is assumed that Landry will take over the starting role for the Cleveland Browns offense. Rashard Higgins had quite the ball game after Beckham went out, totaling 110 receiving yards and hauling in all six of his targets. He ended the game with 17 PPR points.
The Browns will be playing tough teams with strong offenses in the coming weeks and might have to play from behind. They will face the Las Vegas Raiders next week followed by a bye week and then will face two of the best teams in the AFC in weeks 13 and 14 in the Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans. On the flip side, they should have a relatively easy time at the Jets and Giants to round the 2020 regular season.
Keep in mind that Baker Mayfield is always on an uphill battle to win games. He isn’t a star quarterback and as a result isn’t owned in 70% of fantasy leagues. I would stay away from him as a quarterback unless you need to stream one and the Browns have a favorable matchup. Don’t hold onto OBJ with the hope he returns. Instead I would recommend picking up Higgins.
At the end of the day the Browns are the Browns and I wouldn’t trust anyone on their team other than the star running back pair of Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb. According to Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski, injured running back Nick Chubb will return shortly after the bye week. The Browns are a run-heavy offense even when all of their receivers are healthy, so expect then to continue and rely on the running game, especially once Chubb returns.
